Use Device Manager and the built-in camera troubleshooting steps to stabilize the cameras and drivers.
- Check if the camera is being disabled or hidden
- Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
- Look under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the camera is missing, select Action > Scan for hardware changes and wait for Windows to detect and reinstall it.
- If the camera appears but shows as disabled, right‑click it and select Enable device.
- Roll back a problematic driver (if the issue started after an update)
- In Device Manager, right‑click the camera and select Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, then choose Yes.
- Restart the device and test the camera again.
- If Roll Back Driver is not available, skip to the uninstall/reinstall step.
- Uninstall and let Windows reinstall the driver
- In Device Manager, right‑click the camera and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, select Uninstall Device.
- Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device (or Delete the driver software for this device) if available, then select OK.
- In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Wait for Windows to reinstall the driver, then restart the PC and test the camera.
- Check for incompatible or very old camera hardware
- In Device Manager, right‑click the camera and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, select Driver Details.
- If a file name including stream.sys appears, the camera was designed before Windows 7 and is not compatible with current Windows versions; replacing the camera is required.
- Switch to the in‑box UVC driver (for external USB cameras)
- In Device Manager, find the USB webcam under Cameras or Imaging devices.
- Right‑click it and select Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- Choose USB Video Device, then select Next.
- Close the dialog and confirm the camera now appears under Cameras.
- Note: the in‑box UVC driver may not support all advanced features (for example, Windows Hello on some devices).
- Run the Windows camera troubleshooter (Windows 10)
- Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Under Find and fix other problems, select Camera > Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any fixes it suggests and restart.
- Verify Windows and driver updates
- Select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- If no camera update appears, go to Advanced options > Optional updates and install any camera driver updates listed.
- Restart and test.
If the driver continues to auto‑disable or only one of two cameras appears, it typically indicates a faulty or incompatible camera/driver. After these steps, check the device manufacturer’s support page for a specific camera driver or firmware update for the Insider build in use.
