The OneDrive's Retention Sytem Deleted My OneNote Notebooks. I Need Them Restored

OneDrive retention can permanently delete content once its retention and recycle-bin periods expire. When that happens, there is no native way to restore the deleted files or notebooks.

For OneNote notebooks stored in OneDrive, the only available self-service recovery options are:

1. Check OneDrive recycle bin

• Go to the OneDrive website and open the Recycle bin.
• If the notebook files are still there, select them and choose Restore.
• Note: For personal accounts, items in the recycle bin are automatically deleted 30 days after they’re put there; for work or school accounts, the default is 93 days unless the admin changed it.

2. Use “Restore your OneDrive” (if available)

• If a Microsoft 365 subscription is associated with the account, use the Restore your OneDrive feature to roll the entire OneDrive back to a point before the notebooks were deleted:
  1. Go to the OneDrive website.
  2. Select Settings > Restore your OneDrive (or Settings > Options > Restore your OneDrive, depending on account type).
  3. Choose a date/time before May 31, 2026 and complete the restore.
• Important limitations:
  • Only actions within the last 30 days can be undone.
  • Files permanently deleted from the OneDrive recycle bin cannot be recovered.

3. Check OneNote’s own Deleted Notes

• Open the notebook where the notes were expected.
• Use View > Deleted Notes to see if deleted pages/sections are still retained and restore them from there.

If the notebooks were removed by OneDrive’s retention system and are no longer in the recycle bin, and the Restore your OneDrive window does not cover the deletion date (or has already been used and cannot reach that point), there is no built-in Microsoft mechanism to perform a server-side restore of those notebooks.

In that case, recovery would depend on any independent backups (local copies, exported notebooks, or third-party backup solutions). Without such backups, the notebooks cannot be restored.
