Startups: Companies that are in their initial stages of business and typically developing a business model and seeking financing.
Moving an Azure subscription to a different Microsoft Entra tenant can affect how sponsorship or startup credits are applied and billed. In this scenario, the startup credits were tied to the original billing account/profile and sponsorship configuration, not just to the subscription itself. When the subscription was moved to a new tenant, the billing relationship and sponsorship credit application did not follow in the way expected, so the $1000 startup credit no longer appears.
This type of issue cannot be fully corrected by self-service actions in the portal. The supported path is to work with Azure Support so they can review the original sponsorship, billing accounts, and the moved subscription, and then either:
- Move or re-associate the sponsorship/credits to the correct subscription and billing account where possible, and
- Adjust or manage any existing charges that should have been covered by the sponsorship.
Steps:
- Sign in to the Azure portal with the account that originally activated the startup credits and owns the sponsorship.
- Go to Help + support and create two support requests:
- A billing support request describing that a Microsoft for Startups sponsorship credit disappeared after moving the subscription to a new tenant and asking to move/re-associate the sponsorship to the current subscription/tenant and handle any incorrect charges.
- If any services or usage look incorrect after the move, a technical support request for the affected services (for example, if something kept running unexpectedly) so support can verify and correct metering if needed.
- In the billing ticket, include:
- The old tenant ID (aee14b33-55f9-4cf8-a58d-86e90154675c)
- The new tenant ID (4407d3e5-096a-43b1-97cd-54a5054173e6)
- The subscription name/ID
- That this is a Microsoft for Startups credit/sponsorship and the amount ($1000)
Support can then determine whether the sponsorship can be moved to the current subscription or whether another remediation is required. As shown in a similar case, only Azure Support can correctly move the sponsorship and handle existing bills when a subscription move changes the billing account from sponsorship to pay-as-you-go.
Going forward, before moving subscriptions that use startup or sponsorship credits, validate with Support how the move will affect the billing account type and credits to avoid losing sponsorship application.
