How to save Word files to iCloud?

Show me how to save word files to iCloud. Until yesterday I did so routinely. Now I get an error message that there is either too little memory or too little space. There are, however, 2TB of space available.

iCloud does not support live editing of Office files, though it is perfectly safe for storage and file transfer. I've seen many reports of corrupted files from those who have tried.

I don't know what "live editing" means. I create files on my computer and then save (or rather USED to save and now TRY to save) them on iCloud. Is "live editing" some other kind of activity?

Live editing is opening, editing or saving cloud files from within Word. Either use OneDrive instead of iCloud, or copy files from iCloud to your hard disk to edit.

According to the current Microsoft rules, one cannot use iCloud for saving Word documents. One must use the local hard drive, Onedrive, or some other drive whose name I do not recall. Sorry.

Can you cite the source of this? John Korchok is absolutely correct – Word documents can be save to iCloud & it may be done automatically due to System Settings/Preferences.

I believe the information you received may refer to Microsoft's OneDrive cloud as the only supported location for the Auto Save feature in Office programs. Auto Save cannot address other storage devices including iCloud & local/internal/network drives

Until the day before yesterday I routinely saved Word files to iCloud, where I keep all my documents. Now, however, the only way I can do that is to choose a document already on iCloud, duplicate it, and replace the content of the duplicate with the data I want to save, and rename it. I can't move it to another folder, though, so I must go through that same procedure in every folder where I want to save a new document. Sheesh!

Word for Mac saves to online locations such as OneDrive and SharePoint using the built-in “Save As” / “Save to” experience. The documented online-saving workflow is:

In Word for Mac, open the document.
On the File menu, select Save As (or press Command + Shift + S).
If the dialog shows a local folder (e.g., “On My Mac”), select Online Locations.
Navigate to the desired online folder and select Save.

The supported online locations in this workflow are OneDrive and SharePoint. The error message about insufficient memory or disk space when saving is documented as occurring when the Windows page file or disk space is exhausted, or when saving to a full removable disk, and the resolution is to free or add disk space. There is no additional documented mechanism in this context for configuring or troubleshooting iCloud as a save target from within Word.
