When I try to install the Windows Update 2026-05 Preview Update (KB5089573) (26200.85424) I get error Download error - 0x80070005.

It seems to be failing at the reboot stage because I have tried just about everything up to reinstall Windows ISO. That fails as well.

Here is a list of things I've tried that did not work.

  1. Pause and restart updates.
  2. Turning off core.
  3. Restarting Windows Updates, App Readiness, Background Intelligent Services in services.
  4. Run Windows PowerShell as administrator net stop wuauserv Rename-Item C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old net start wuauserv Rmdir C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old -recurse T Run SFC & DISM Command sfc /scannow Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
  5. Downloading the update and installing from MS catalogue. Everything I have tried failed. Any help getting this update installed would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know of anything to help with this.

KB5089573 is an optional preview update, it is basically an early beta release of the June update released in May.

The optional preview updates can be hard to install sometimes, may contain bugs (KB5089573 has a reported problem with the system tray disappearing) and there is no need to install the optional preview updates.

If that update is continually failing, below that update is a switch to 'Get the latest updates as soon as they are released', disable that option and restart your PC, that will stop the optional update continually trying to install and wait for the full May update to be released next Tuesday.

Error 0x80070005 during Windows Update indicates an access denied problem, usually due to file system or registry permissions blocking the servicing stack.

Because System File Checker, DISM, SoftwareDistribution reset, and manual catalog install have already been tried, use steps that specifically target access-denied causes and then, if needed, move to repair/reinstall.

    1. Check CBS.log for the exact access-denied object
      1. Open File Explorer and go to %windir%\Logs\CBS.
      2. Open the latest CBS.log in a text editor.
      3. Search for , error around the time of the failed update.
      4. Look for entries that show ACCESS_DENIED or similar and identify whether it references a file path or a registry key.
      5. Once the object is identified, adjust NTFS or registry permissions so that the servicing stack (SYSTEM and TrustedInstaller) has full required access, then retry the update.
The documented mitigation for 0x80070005 is to use CBS.log in exactly this way to locate and correct the permission problem.
    2. Re-run DISM and SFC after fixing permissions After correcting any permissions found in CBS.log:
      1. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
      2. Run:
              DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
              SFC.exe /Scannow

      3. Restart the device and run Windows Update again.
    3. If DISM cannot repair from Windows Update, use a repair source If DISM reports missing files or cannot restore health using Windows Update as a source, use a local WIM or another Windows installation as the repair source:
      • With a local install.wim:
             DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:WIM:C:\install.wim:1 /LimitAccess
             sfc /scannow

      • Or with another machine running the same Windows version:
             DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\\<servername>\c$\Windows /LimitAccess

      Then retry Windows Update.
    4. If corruption is extensive or permissions are too complex to fix If CBS.log shows widespread component store corruption or non-repairable image state, or if permissions cannot be reliably corrected, use an in-place repair/reinstall of the current Windows version (keeping files and apps). This is the path that has resolved similar persistent update failures (including other KBs) when DISM/SFC and in-place upgrade initially struggled, by reinstalling the current version via Windows Update or ISO as described in the referenced guidance.

If all of the above still fails and 0x80070005 persists, collect logs (CBS.log, DISM logs, WindowsUpdate.log) and engage Microsoft support, as the remaining issue is likely a specific permission or component-store anomaly that requires case-by-case analysis.
