To reset a HoloLens so it no longer has the previous owner’s data or account, use the built‑in reset or, if needed, a full reflash.
- Make sure the device has at least 20–40% battery and is using a proper charger.
- Put on the HoloLens and sign in if it lets you, then:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Reset & recovery > Reset this device.
- Confirm the reset.
If the device is locked, not usable, or you can’t get into Settings, a clean reflash can be used instead (HoloLens 2):
- On a Windows 10 PC, install Advanced Recovery Companion and download the latest HoloLens 2 image from https://aka.ms/hololens2download.
- Ensure the HoloLens is charged to at least 40%.
- For normal flashing:
- Turn on the HoloLens.
- Connect it to the PC with a USB cable.
- In Advanced Recovery Companion, select the Microsoft HoloLens device and follow the instructions to complete the reflash.
- If the device doesn’t start correctly or ARC can’t detect it, use manual flashing mode:
- Unplug the USB Type‑C cable.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds until all LEDs turn off.
- While holding volume up, press and release power to start the device, keep holding volume up for 15 seconds, then release.
- Connect to the PC and, once ARC detects the device, follow the on‑screen steps to install the image.
Warning: Resetting or reflashing erases all personal data, apps, and settings on the HoloLens.
