Windows 10 (and 11) activation requires either a 25‑character product key or a digital license. Without one of these, Windows cannot be activated.
For Windows 10 Home, the product key or digital license is found based on how Windows was originally obtained:
- Preinstalled on a new PC (OEM license)
The key is usually:- Preinstalled/embedded in the device firmware (BIOS/UEFI), or
- On a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker on the device, or
- Included with the packaging the PC came in.
If the key/COA can’t be found, contact the PC manufacturer.
- Retail copy (boxed or digital)
- If bought as a boxed copy from an authorized retailer, the key is on a label or card inside the box.
- If bought as a digital download from an authorized retailer, the key is in the confirmation email or in the retailer’s digital locker.
- If bought from a Microsoft website, the key is in the confirmation email, and purchase details can be checked in the Microsoft account Order history.
- Free upgrade / digital license
If Windows 10 was obtained as a free upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, the device likely has a digital license instead of a product key. In that case:- Activation normally happens automatically when the same edition of Windows 10 is installed on the same device and it connects to the internet.
- If substantial hardware changes (such as motherboard replacement) were made, or if a different version/edition was installed, activation may fail and a new license/key may be required.
- If the key truly cannot be recovered
- If the original DVD/box, email, COA sticker, or digital license cannot be located, and the device does not auto‑activate, a new product key or copy of Windows must be purchased to activate again.
