To regain access to an Xbox account when only the gamertag is known, first identify the Microsoft account (email) that was used with that gamertag, then recover that Microsoft account.
- Check other email accounts for Microsoft messages
- Open all active email accounts and search for messages from Microsoft about Xbox, digital game purchases, subscriptions, or receipts (for example, “Microsoft”, “Xbox”, “order”, “receipt”).
- Any receipt or Xbox email usually shows the Microsoft account address that is associated with the gamertag.
- Use Xbox to look up the Microsoft email (if still signed in anywhere)
- On any Xbox console where that gamertag might still be signed in, follow the steps in the “Find your Microsoft email address walkthrough” referenced in the Xbox support article to see which Microsoft email is tied to the gamertag.
- If the Microsoft account username is still unknown
- Follow the guidance in “Check products or services where you used your Microsoft account” to look for the account across Microsoft services (Xbox, email receipts, etc.).
- If the username still cannot be found, it may indicate the Microsoft account has been closed; in that case, see the guidance on how to reopen a Microsoft account.
- Once the Microsoft account email is found
- If the password no longer works, use the standard recovery flow: go to the Recover your account page and follow the steps to reset the password.
- If there is no access to the security info (old phone/email), follow the “Help with the Microsoft account recovery form” guidance:
- Ensure there is a working contact email.
- Gather as much information as possible about the account (old passwords, services used, purchase info, etc.).
- Complete the account recovery form from a familiar device/location to improve the chance of success.
If the recovery form is unsuccessful and there is no way to verify identity, the account may not be recoverable.
