File saved in one drive with sync on. No previous history shown. Is there a way to recover?

Hi @Thomas Chun,

Based on your sharing, may I confirm the version history you have already checked is Version History in OneDrive web or in File Explorer? If the one you checked is in File Explorer, I suggest you first try checking Version History from OneDrive on the web to see if you can restore older versions of your file. If there are no versions listed there either, then OneDrive likely has no previous version available for that file. In that case, I suggest you should proceed with these steps next:

1/ Check the OneDrive Recycle Bin

  • Check the OneDrive web Recycle bin to see if the original file was deleted, renamed, moved, or replaced
  • Deleted items are normally kept from 30 days (for personal account) up to 93 days (for business account) so if the file is lost recently and can be found in the Recycle Bin, you can easily restore it.

2/ Restore your OneDrive

(Note: this affects the whole OneDrive, not just one file. When restoring, any files or folders created after the Restore point date will be sent to your OneDrive Recycle Bin. You can restore files from there regardless of restore point date.)

This step can restore the entire OneDrive to a previous time and undo file/folder actions within the last 30 days:

  • Sign into OneDrive website with your account
  • At the top of the page, select Settings > Options, and then select Restore your OneDrive from the left navigation.
  • On the Restore your OneDrive page, select a date from the dropdown list, such as Yesterday, or select Custom date and time.
  • Use the activity chart and activity feed to review the recent activities that you want to undo.
  • After carefully checking, select Restore

For more detailed guidance, please refer to: Restore your OneDrive - Microsoft Support

3/ Check local Windows storage

  • Right click the Excel file or its folder > right-click and select Properties > Previous Versions to check if there is any older version you can restore
  • Check your local Recycle Bin to see if it is accidentally moved there
  • Open Excel and go to File > Open > Recover Unsaved Workbook > check in the Auto Recover folder to see if you can find any older version there.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, you can try these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to find a way.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. I'm looking forward to your reply.
