This is usually normal behavior in Windows 11 and not a sign that something is broken.
What you’re likely seeing is a combination of different update types that Windows installs in phases:
Why this keeps happening
1. Windows updates come in separate packages Microsoft often releases updates in parts:
- Cumulative updates (monthly security + fixes)
- .NET updates
- Defender security updates
- Driver updates
So even if one update installs successfully, another one can appear the next day.
2. “Pending restart” or incomplete update cycle Sometimes Windows shows as updated, but:
- A restart didn’t fully complete the installation
- Or a second “finishing update” is still pending
Check: 👉 Settings → Windows Update → “Restart required” or “Pending install”
3. Staged / gradual rollout (Controlled Feature Rollouts) Microsoft rolls out updates in waves:
- Your device may receive multiple small “waves” of the same update package
- Especially common with Windows 11 feature updates
4. Defender definitions update daily Windows Security (Defender) updates multiple times per day in some cases. These also show up as “updates available”.
5. Driver updates keep reappearing If Windows Update keeps offering the same driver:
- The driver version may not be fully compatible
- Or Windows rolls back and reoffers it
What you can do
- Restart your PC once after updates (important)
- Go to Windows Update → Update history and check if updates are actually installing successfully
- Run:
-
sfc /scannow-
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Optional: pause updates for 1 week to reset the cycle
-
-
When to worry
Only if:
- The same update KB number installs repeatedly every day
- Or updates fail with an error code
In most cases, what you’re experiencing is completely normal Windows Update behavior in Windows 11, especially with security + Defender + cumulative updates running on different schedules.
