Managing sound and video settings during Teams meetings and calls
Try these steps in order, focusing on Teams and the operating system, since the mic works in other apps:
- Make sure Teams is allowed to use the microphone (desktop app)
- On Windows:
- Open Settings > Privacy & security.
- Under App permissions, select Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Microsoft Teams (work or school).
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- Close all apps and restart the device.
- On macOS:
- Open System Preferences.
- Select Security & Privacy > Microphone.
- Ensure Microsoft Teams is checked.
- Restart the device.
- On Windows:
- Check Windows sound input settings
- From Start, open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input:
- Select the correct mic under Choose a device for speaking or recording.
- Make sure the Volume slider is not muted and is turned up.
- If the mic is disabled, go to Advanced > More sound settings, open the Recording tab, right‑click the mic and select Enable.
- Select the correct mic in Teams and test it
- Before a meeting:
- In Teams, select Settings and more (⋯) > Settings.
- Go to Devices.
- Under Audio settings, choose the correct device from the Microphone dropdown.
- Select Make a test call and follow the instructions from Test Call Bot to record and play back a short message. If playback is silent, change the mic device and test again.
- During a meeting:
- In the meeting window, select the arrow next to the Mic icon.
- Choose More audio settings.
- Confirm the correct microphone is selected. If it is missing, unplug and re‑plug the device, or re‑pair Bluetooth.
- Before a meeting:
- Check browser permissions if using Teams on the web
- In Microsoft Edge:
- Select Settings and more > Settings.
- Go to Cookies and site permissions > Microphone.
- Turn on Ask before accessing (recommended).
- In Google Chrome:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security > Site settings > Permissions > Microphone.
- Ensure the correct device is selected at the top and Sites can ask to use your microphone is selected.
- In Microsoft Edge:
- If Windows does not detect the mic or input is still dead
- Verify the mic/headset is connected correctly and positioned properly.
- In Settings > System > Sound, select the mic, then under Input settings run a test (Windows 11) or adjust Levels and Microphone Boost (Windows 10) and watch Test your microphone to confirm Windows sees input.
- If Windows does not detect the device at all, reinstall audio drivers:
- Right‑click Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right‑click the audio device > Uninstall device (check Attempt to remove/Delete the driver if shown).
- Restart the PC; Windows will reinstall drivers or use Scan for hardware changes.
- Then update the driver from Device Manager.
If the mic works in Windows sound tests but not in Teams after these steps, use the Call me back option in Teams meetings as a temporary workaround so audio is carried over the phone while continuing to troubleshoot permissions and device selection.
