An Azure service that is used to collect, analyze, and act on telemetry data from Azure and on-premises environments.
Currently, there is no Microsoft-supported capability to directly migrate or bulk-copy historical telemetry data from one Application Insights resource to another while preserving the data exactly as it exists in the source resource. Application Insights is designed primarily for telemetry collection and analysis rather than historical data migration between instances Application Insights OpenTelemetry observability overview - Azure Monitor | Microsoft Learn
For your scenario (2 TB of telemetry data from one year) the best available approach would be to export the data from the source resource and re-ingest it into the target resource using a custom process.
Here is the approach I recommend:
- Export or retrieve the telemetry data from the source Application Insights resource (or its associated Log Analytics workspace if it is workspace-based).
- Use a custom migration solution such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, or PowerShell/Python scripts to process the exported data.
- Re-ingest the telemetry into the new Application Insights resource using Azure Monitor ingestion APIs.

Please note the following considerations:
- Original event timestamps can often be included during re-ingestion, but some ingestion metadata and internal system-generated properties may not be preserved exactly.
- Migration duration may be significant depending on throughput and throttling limits.
- It is recommended to validate the process with a smaller subset of data before performing a full-scale migration.
If the primary goal is to retain access to historical data rather than physically move it, another option is to keep the existing Application Insights resource and use Azure Monitor's cross-workspace query capabilities to analyze data across multiple resources without migrating it Query across resources with Azure Monitor - Azure Monitor | Microsoft Learn
This is not a Microsoft-supported migration feature but a custom workaround.
