Azure for Students subscription blocks writes after credit exhaustion — how to retrieve data?

My Azure for Students subscription has exhausted its $100 credit. The subscription shows as "Enabled" in az account show, but all write operations fail with ReadOnlyDisabledSubscription error.

I have a PostgreSQL Flexible Server (VNet-only, public access disabled) with research data I need to export. I can't create an ACI container inside the VNet because write operations are blocked.

I'm no longer eligible for the student offer renewal. What are my options to regain just enough write access to run a single query (~5 minutes) and retrieve my data? Is there another path other than PAYG?

Hello Wayne – you’ve hit the built-in spending limit on the Azure for Students offer, so once your $100 ran out, writes get blocked and everything goes into a read-only state for the rest of the “billing period.” Unfortunately there’s no “student-only” top-up path beyond your original credits, so you have two realistic ways to get just enough write time to pull your data out:

Upgrade (even briefly) to Pay-As-You-Go to remove the spending limit • In the portal, go to Cost Management + Billing → Subscriptions → select your Azure for Students subscription. • Click the banner to remove the spending limit (you can choose “for current billing period only”). • Add a valid payment method. Once the limit is removed, your subscription comes back fully “green,” you can spin up that ACI in your VNet, run your export (pg_dump or whatever), copy the files to storage, then turn the limit back on or even cancel the subscription when you’re done.

Open a short-lived support request to re-enable for data migration Azure Support can temporarily re-open a spent-out Students subscription (typically for 48 hours) purely to let you migrate your data off. No PAYG conversion needed, but it must be a support ticket.

If neither of those fits (for example you really can’t add any payment method), the only way to get write access is via that support ticket route.

When the $100 Azure for Students credit is exhausted or the 12‑month period ends, the subscription is effectively blocked for new usage and write operations. Services move into a disabled/read-only state, and there is no special “partial write” or “read-only with brief write access” mode that can be enabled just to run a query.

From the documented behavior:

Azure for Students provides $100 credit for 12 months.
Any usage beyond free services is deducted from that credit.
After the credit is exhausted or the 12 months end, the subscription is disabled and services are decommissioned if not upgraded or renewed.
To continue using Azure services (including performing operations against existing resources), the only supported options are:
- Renew Azure for Students (only if still eligible), or
- Upgrade to a pay-as-you-go subscription.

Because eligibility for renewal is no longer met, the only documented path to regain write access is to upgrade the existing Azure for Students subscription to a pay‑as‑you‑go subscription in the Azure portal or by contacting Azure support. Once upgraded, normal write operations resume and data can be exported (for example, by connecting directly to the PostgreSQL Flexible Server from an allowed client or by deploying temporary compute in the VNet).

There is no alternative path described in the documentation that would allow temporary write access or data export without upgrading to pay‑as‑you‑go.
