A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
On iPad, AutoSave and file recovery depend on where the document is stored and whether the device is online. To reduce the chance of losing work like this again, use these practices:
- Confirm where the file is stored before working
- Prefer storing school work in OneDrive or SharePoint (via your school account) rather than only “On my iPad.”
- When a file is in OneDrive/SharePoint and AutoSave is on, changes are saved to the cloud and can be recovered more reliably.
- Make sure the file is opened online at least once
- For files in OneDrive/SharePoint/other cloud storage, open them while connected to the internet before going offline. This lets Word cache the file so offline edits can sync later.
- If you work offline, changes will sync to OneDrive as soon as the device is back online and the app is running.
- Use AutoSave correctly on iOS
- In Word on iPad, open the document, tap the three dots (⋯), and confirm AutoSave is turned on.
- If AutoSave is off, regularly tap Save or use Save a Copy to avoid relying only on autosaving.
- Use Version History / recovery when something goes wrong
If a document is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint:- Use File > Browse Version History (in Word on desktop or web) to see earlier versions and restore one if edits seem to be missing.
- If Word or the device crashes, the next time the app opens, check the Document Recovery pane and save any recovered versions.
- Check OneDrive and Recycle Bin when a file “disappears”
- Sign in to OneDrive on the web and use Search everything to look for the file by name, type, or keywords.
- Check the Recycle bin in OneDrive; if the file was deleted, it can often be restored.
- If your school supports it, OneDrive can sometimes be restored to a previous point in time, which can bring back earlier versions of files.
- General habits to avoid future loss
- Keep the iPad online while working when possible so AutoSave can sync immediately.
- Avoid force-closing Word right after big edits; give it a moment to sync.
- For important assignments, periodically save a copy (for example, to another OneDrive folder) so there is a backup version.
These steps won’t recover yesterday’s missing edits if they were never synced or saved, but following them will greatly reduce the chance of losing work in the future.
