A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Dear @Nastya,
I completely understand how frustrating it is to lose your hard work, especially when you can see the proof that you did it!
The root cause here usually comes down to the file path. AutoSave only functions when a file is actively saved in OneDrive or SharePoint. When you export a document directly from Schoology, the iPad often opens it in a local, temporary "sandbox" state. Even if the AutoSave toggle appears to be "on," the system cannot sync the changes because it lacks a valid cloud path to save them to.
To ensure this never happens to you again, I recommend these quick habits:
- Move to OneDrive First: If you download or export a file from Schoology or an email, always tap File > Save a Copy (or move) and select a folder inside your school OneDrive before you begin editing.
- Work Directly from the App: Instead of opening the file from Schoology, save the file to OneDrive first. Then, open the Word app, go to your Open tab, and launch the file from your OneDrive directory.
- Verify the Top Bar: Before you start typing, glance at the top title bar in Word to confirm that AutoSave is toggled on and that the file location shows it is hosted in the cloud.
- Check for "Saved": Before closing the app or switching tasks, ensure the top bar explicitly says Saved next to the document name.
For your reference, you can check Microsoft's official guidance on how this feature behaves: Turn on autosave in Microsoft 365 apps - Microsoft Support and What is AutoSave? - Microsoft Support
