Credit Monitoring Not Working in Windows Defender, But Already Active with Experian

I have an active Microsoft 365 Family subscription. Two days ago, I called Experian and completed my authentication successfully over the phone with them. Yesterday, I called Experian again and they confirmed my Credit Monitoring is already active. However, today, I checked the Microsoft Defender application on my iPhone and MacBook laptop, and it still does not recognize or activate my Credit Monitoring feature. It keeps asking me to set up my Credit Monitoring instead of showing me that it's already active. Every time I try to set it up, it takes me to Terms and asks me to agree, skips asking for my SSN, autofills my name and address, then says, "Something went wrong. Wait a bit, then try again." Please see screenshots attached. Can I please get help configuring my Credit Monitoring feature in the Windows Defender application on my devices?A B C D

Credit monitoring in Microsoft Defender is provided through a direct integration with Experian and must be activated from within Defender itself, even if Experian has already enabled monitoring on their side.

From the available information:

  • Credit monitoring in Defender is part of the broader identity theft monitoring feature set, which also includes dark web monitoring, restoration support, and insurance.
  • Activation is initiated from the Microsoft Defender dashboard by selecting Get started on the Credit monitoring (or Identity Theft Monitoring) tile and then following the in-app flow, including accepting the supplemental terms of service and providing required identity information such as name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number.
  • Experian stores and processes the data needed to retrieve credit reports, scores, and alerts, and provides the credit score (VantageScore 3.0) and report that appear in Defender.
  • Microsoft does not store or see personally identifiable information used for this service; Experian does not share or sell this data.

Because the issue described occurs after terms acceptance and before completion of the Experian identity-verification step, and because the context does not document any client-side workaround for the “Something went wrong. Wait a bit, then try again.” error, the supported path to resolve this is to work with Microsoft support so they can investigate the Defender–Experian linkage for the specific account and subscription and ensure that identity theft monitoring/credit monitoring is correctly provisioned.

If identity theft monitoring has already been enabled once and is in a bad state, one supported option documented is to unenroll and re-enroll:

  1. Open the Microsoft Defender dashboard.
  2. Select Dark web monitoring or Credit monitoring (if present).
  3. Select the ellipsis (…) and choose Remove all your info.
    • This deletes the information provided to identity theft monitoring in Defender, but does not affect breach or credit data held by Experian.
    • Removing the account for dark web monitoring also removes credit monitoring and vice versa.
  4. After removal completes, start the setup again from the Identity Theft Monitoring or Credit Monitoring tile and follow the on-screen instructions to re-onboard.

If the tile never transitions to an active state or the same error persists after re-onboarding, contact Microsoft support from the Microsoft 365 subscription (or via the Defender help and feedback path) so they can check the backend configuration for identity theft monitoring on the tenant and coordinate with Experian if needed.
