The only supported path to regain access to a lost or cancelled Microsoft 365 tenant is through Microsoft support and the Data Protection team. Community forums and moderators cannot directly restore access or reverse cancellation.
Given the description (tenant “cancelled as requested,” no access to apps or admin center, and the account no longer recognized), take these steps immediately:
- Open a Microsoft support ticket for tenant access recovery
- Use the global customer service phone numbers listed here: Global customer service phone numbers.
- Clearly state that:
- This is a business / organization tenant.
- The Microsoft 365 subscription was cancelled without your request.
- You are the sole global administrator and are now locked out of the tenant and all services.
- You need the Data Protection / Tenant Recovery team to verify identity and help restore access.
- The Data Protection team can help to:
- Reset credentials of an administrator account.
- Claim ownership or regain access to a tenant owned by the organization.
- Prepare proof of ownership and identity
Support and Data Protection will require verification before they touch the tenant. Be ready with:- Official business documentation (registration/incorporation documents).
- Evidence that the organization owns the primary domain used in the tenant (DNS/registrar records, invoices).
- Any billing information tied to the Microsoft 365 subscription (invoices, last 4 digits of payment method, billing address).
- The exact tenant domain and admin UPN that were used (for example,
******@yourdomain.comand/oryourtenant.onmicrosoft.com).
- Use any available Microsoft 365 support channel to raise the ticket
If direct sign-in is impossible because the tenant is not recognized:- Call support using the phone numbers above and ask the frontline agent to open a Data Protection / tenant recovery ticket for a locked-out global admin.
- If the original subscription was purchased via a partner or reseller, contact that partner and ask them to open a service request on your behalf.
- Act quickly due to lifecycle and deletion timelines
- After cancellation, Microsoft 365 subscriptions move through Expired → Disabled → Deprovisioned states.
- During Expired and Disabled, data is still retained (initially accessible to users, then to admins only).
- Once the subscription reaches Deprovisioned, data is deleted and the Microsoft Entra ID tenant may be removed if not used by other services.
- Because of this lifecycle, it is critical to have the Data Protection team engaged before the tenant reaches the final deletion stage.
- If the tenant is classified as inactive and blocked
- In some cases, tenants that are inactive for a long period are blocked and then permanently deleted after a short window.
- If the tenant has been blocked for less than the allowed window (for example, 20 days in some scenarios), support may still be able to unblock it.
- If it has already passed the permanent deletion point, recovery is no longer possible; only Microsoft support can confirm this status.
- If the domain is now attached to an unmanaged directory
- If the domain was somehow moved or ended up in an unmanaged directory, a global admin of the organization can perform an admin takeover of that unmanaged directory to reclaim it.
- This is done by verifying domain ownership and following the admin takeover process described in Admin takeover of an unmanaged directory.
- This does not directly restore the old tenant’s data, but it can be part of regaining control of the organization’s domain in Microsoft Entra ID.
- If subscriptions were cancelled as part of fraud or unsanctioned-tenant cleanup
- Microsoft guidance for suspected or unwanted tenants is to cancel subscriptions and, if needed, contact support to cancel/delete them.
- If the tenant was cancelled in error or due to a misunderstanding, only Microsoft support can review billing and subscription history and determine whether it can be reactivated within the grace period.
In summary, there is no self-service or community-based way to restore a cancelled or inaccessible tenant. The required path is:
- Contact Microsoft support by phone and explicitly request Data Protection / tenant recovery assistance for a locked-out sole global admin.
- Provide all requested proof of identity, domain ownership, and billing details.
- Work with the Data Protection team to either:
- Reset an admin account and reactivate the subscription if still within the lifecycle window, or
- Confirm whether the tenant and data have already been permanently deleted.
