Follow these steps to fix Windows Update that is stuck or not working and to make sure Windows is activated:
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and apply any fixes it suggests.
- Repair system files
- In the search box on the taskbar, type Command Prompt.
- Right‑click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run these commands one by one:
-
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - After it finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
-
- When both complete, restart the PC and try Windows Update again.
- Perform a clean restart
- A clean restart starts Windows with minimal drivers and startup programs to avoid software conflicts.
- Follow the steps in How to perform a clean boot in Windows, then try Windows Update again.
- Check Windows activation
- Open Settings → Update & Security → Activation (or Settings → System → Activation on newer builds).
- If Windows is not activated, follow the guidance in Activation in Windows 10 / Get help with Windows activation errors (applies similarly for Windows 11 activation issues) to resolve activation problems.
If updates are still stuck after these steps, use the detailed guide in Troubleshoot problems updating Windows for more targeted checks and fixes.
