Word documents are opening as Adobe PDF

I recently purchased Microsoft 365 so that I could print Word documents. However, when I open a Word doc that I emailed to myself, it opens as an Adobe PDF. This didn't happen until recently. Has anyone ever had this happen? If so, how do I resolve the situation?

Thank you

The behavior is caused by file associations in Windows: .doc or .docx files are currently associated with Adobe instead of Word, so double‑clicking them opens Adobe PDF tools.

To fix this, re‑associate Word documents with Word:

  1. Open Control Panel in Windows.
  2. Select Programs > Default Programs.
  3. Choose Set a default for a file type or link type.
  4. In the search box, type .docx (and .doc if needed).
  5. Select the entry for .docx, then choose Microsoft Word as the default app and confirm.
  6. Repeat for any other Word file types that are opening in Adobe.

If the problem persists, run a Quick Repair of Office to reset file associations:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the Microsoft 365 Apps/Office product.
  4. Choose Change > Quick Repair > Repair.

After this, double‑clicking Word documents should open them in Word instead of Adobe.

If you received a OneDrive link to the document rather than a "traditional" e-mail attachment, the document will usually open in the online version of Word. Note that printing from Word online will convert the document to PDF. There is no way around it, other than downloading the doc and opening it in your locally installed Word version.
