Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
The phone number alone cannot be used to recover or sign in to a deleted or inaccessible Microsoft account, especially if the original owner (your dad) no longer remembers the account details or has removed/closed it.
To see if the account can still be recovered, follow these steps:
- Use the Sign-in Helper
- Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page and select the Sign-in Helper when you can’t sign in.
- Enter the email address or mobile phone number that appears when trying to log in.
- If a problem is detected, follow the instructions provided. If no problem is detected, the tool will guide through self-help options.
- Check if the account still exists
- If the username or email is “not recognized anymore” or you see messages like “We couldn't find an account with that username” or “account doesn't exist”, follow the guidance under My username has stopped working and use the Recover your account flow.
- If the account has been inactive for more than two years, it may have been deleted and can no longer be reopened.
- Try account recovery (if an email/alias is known)
- If any email address, phone number, or Skype name for that account is known, use the Recover your account option to reset the password:
- Enter the sign-in ID (email/phone/Skype).
- Choose where to receive a security code (email or phone, if still accessible).
- Enter the code and set a new password.
- If any email address, phone number, or Skype name for that account is known, use the Recover your account option to reset the password:
- If codes are not received
- If verification codes are not arriving to the phone or email shown, follow the verification code troubleshooting guidance and, if needed, choose another verification method (another email, etc.) or wait and try again later.
If the account truly belongs to your dad and he deleted or lost all access to it (and you don’t have working recovery methods such as his email, phone, or security info), recovery may not be possible. Microsoft support cannot bypass verification, send codes on your behalf, or restore a fully deleted account.
