Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

When you select the Forgot password option on the screen, are you prompted to enter your phone number?

After entering the number, Microsoft usually sends a password reset link to your email instead of a verification code.

    Step 1:

Visit the link here on your desktop or in any web browser - https://web.groupme.com/signin

    group me forgot password (2)

    Step 2 :

forgot password phone number screen (1) (1)

    Step 3:

    inbox link (1) (1)

See your email address for the password reset link.

    Note -

If you are trying to reset your password on your Phone, the Reset PIN will be sent to both your email address and the phone number associated with your account. Please check your email to see if you have received the verification code there as well.

GroupMe PINs are always sent by SMS to the phone number registered on the account. If that number is no longer in use, the PIN cannot be received on that phone and the number on the account must be updated.

    Use one of these approaches:

    1. If still signed in anywhere (another phone, tablet, or web browser)
      • Open GroupMe on that signed‑in device.
      • Change the phone number on the account to the new, working number, then request a new PIN to that number.
      Android:
      1. Select the profile picture.
      2. Tap Edit profileEdit.
      3. Tap the pencil next to the phone number.
      4. Enter the new phone number → SEND PIN, then follow the on‑screen steps.
      iOS:
      1. Select the profile picture.
      2. Tap Edit profileEdit.
      3. Tap the phone number field.
      4. Enter the new phone number → Get PIN, then follow the on‑screen steps.
      Windows app:
      1. Select the avatar (profile picture).
      2. Select the pencilChange your Phone Number.
      3. Select Change Number.
      4. Enter the new phone number → Send PIN, then follow the on‑screen steps.
      Web:
      1. Sign in to GroupMe in a browser.
      2. Select the avatar (profile picture).
      3. Select Edit next to the current phone number.
      4. Enter the new phone number → Submit, then follow the on‑screen steps and enter the PIN sent to the new number.
    2. If not signed in on any device and the old number is gone
      • PINs can take up to five minutes to arrive, but if the number is no longer yours or the carrier/service is unsupported, the PIN will not reach you.
      • Keep the app on the PIN screen (do not restart registration, which generates new PINs).
      • Contact GroupMe support and state that the phone number on the account is no longer accessible and you cannot receive the PIN. Include the phone number that is on the account and the new number you want to use so support can assist.

If PINs are not arriving even to a valid, current number, it may be because GroupMe cannot send PINs to that carrier or to internet phone services (for example, Google Voice). In that case, also contact support from the PIN screen and provide the number and carrier details.
