Hello,
I just bought a brand new Surface Pro 11 13" (OLED, Snapdragon X Elite, 16Gb). It is running Windows 11 Home, 25H5, build 26200.8457.
When I started using it, 3 features started breaking after 1 restart:
- Outlook (new, MS Store install) either opens and immediately closes, or doesn't open at all.
- The clipboard history, text-to-speech assistant, emoji menu, and more importantly the virtual keyboard (the one you can use all the previous tools from, that usually shows up when no type cover is attached): none of these open at all. The virtual keyboard doesn't show up when the type cover is absent and the cursor is in a text field. It doesn't show up when I keep the icon in the taskbar bottom right tray and tap on it with a finger either.
- The Start menu search bar doesn't let me access it. When I try clicking on it, it just won't let me into the text field for it. The start menu layout doesn't make up for it. I can't access it no matter if it is in the start menu itself or in the task bar. When I open the start menu, the cursor is automatically placed on my apps, as if I was using the tab key even though I'm not.
At first, I thought it was one/some of my emulated programs that caused these issues, as I am not too familiar with ARM-powered devices. I tried making new users and installing programs I thought could be culprits one by one, and restarting after each install. But no matter the programs, the issues showed up again. I tried reinstalling Windows from a local save, but after installing the same programs, the issue kept showing up. I also tried running /scf scannow and DISM commands. At this point, I had installed no Windows update on this device on my own.
Ultimately, I tried: reinstalling Windows from an online save (complete reinstall with files wiped). After setup, all of the features above behaved normally (I checked for each). Then, I installed Windows updates ONLY (no program/app, be it Microsoft or third-party). The updates in question are: KB5087051, KB5054156, KB5078674, KB5090935. I then restarted the device from the Start menu. After the restart, these three features were broken again.
I would please like to first get help for the virtual keyboard not working. I'm coming from a Surface Pro 8 and I use it most like a tablet, so the virtual keyboard is absolutely vital to me.
I appreciate any help. Thank you
