Hello,

I am signing up for the Azure for Startups offer and had a question regarding the payment verification step.

Can I use someone else’s credit card for identity verification if I have permission from the card owner? Will this cause any issue with account verification, startup credits, or future billing?

Also, will Microsoft automatically deduct money from the card just by adding the card details, if yes give an approx amount

Using a different person’s credit card for Azure for Startups sign-up is technically possible as long as the card details (name, address, CVV) exactly match the bank records and the country/region matches what is entered in the Azure “About you” and billing address sections. However, the account and subscription will then be tied to that cardholder for billing, which can create issues later if the cardholder and startup owner are not the same (for example, when updating payment methods or resolving billing disputes). The documented guidance assumes the payment method belongs to the account owner.

For Azure for Startups activation specifically:

    • A valid credit card is required to complete Azure sign-up and to prevent service interruptions when credits end.
    • The country selected must match the country of the credit card used.
    • Azure credits are then applied to the subscription; charges only start when credits are exhausted or expire.

    Regarding automatic charges:

    • During initial sign-up, Azure may place a small, temporary verification hold on the card. This is not a permanent charge and is removed within three to five days. The exact amount is not specified in the documentation, but it is described as a “small, temporary verification hold,” not a usage fee.
    • After sign-up, Microsoft does not charge the card just for having it on file. Actual charges occur only if billable Azure usage exceeds available credits or continues after credits expire.

    To avoid issues:

    • Ensure the billing address and card details exactly match the card issuer’s records.
    • Ensure the selected country/region matches the card’s country.
    • Coordinate clearly with the card owner, since they will see any future Azure charges if usage exceeds credits.
