The message indicates that the Azure subscription has already been canceled and is in the process of being deleted. When a subscription is canceled, billing stops immediately and no further payment is required, which is why the amount due shows $0.00.
Key points from the lifecycle:
- After cancellation, services are disabled (VMs deallocated, temporary IPs freed, storage becomes read-only) and billing stops immediately.
- Azure closes the current billing cycle within up to 72 hours and issues a final invoice. If that invoice is $0.00, no payment is needed.
- Three days after cancellation (for customer-led subscriptions), the Delete subscription option becomes available in the Azure portal. If not deleted manually, the subscription is automatically deleted 90 days after cancellation.
- During the 30–90 day retention period after cancellation, data is retained only for potential recovery/reactivation and is not billed.
If the subscription is no longer needed and the amount due is $0.00, no further action is required unless there is a desire to manually delete the subscription earlier via Subscriptions in the Azure portal once the delete option is available.
