Internet becomes unstable after booting from sleep mode

Hi,
Since recently after my laptop stayed in sleep mode for some time the internet connection becomes unstable. The Wi-Fi is still present and running normally but generally nothing is loading, it seems as if it connects to net for a second and disconnects again and stands so in the loop. Sometimes running Windows Diagnostics helps, but most of the times I just have to restart the laptop completely. I am using Windows 11

Hi Timur Bulatov,

Thanks for sharing the details, this type of issue (Wi‑Fi appears connected but behaves unstable after waking from sleep) is usually related to how the network adapter resumes its state.

Here are some additional targeted steps that you can try:

1, Change wireless power settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options
  • Click Change plan settings > Advanced settings
  • Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management, set it to Off
  • Expand Wireless Adapter Settings, set Power Saving Mode = Maximum Performance

2, Prevent the Wi‑Fi adapter from being powered off

  • Open Device Manager
  • Expand Network adapters
  • Right‑click your Wi‑Fi adapter > Properties
  • Go to Power Management
  • Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

As an optional testing step, you can disable IPv6 to rule out protocol-related instability after resume.

  • Open Network Connections (ncpa.cpl)
  • Right‑click Wi‑Fi > Properties
  • Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6)

Try the following steps in order to stabilize Wi‑Fi after resuming from sleep in Windows 11:

    1. Run the built‑in Network troubleshooter
      1. Select Start > Settings > Network & internet.
      2. Select Status from the left menu (on Windows 10) or the equivalent status page in Windows 11.
      3. Scroll down and select Network troubleshooter and follow the on‑screen steps. This can automatically detect and fix common resume‑from‑sleep issues.
    2. Check Wi‑Fi connection status and Airplane mode
      1. Select the Network icon on the right side of the taskbar and confirm Wi‑Fi is turned on and shows Connected to the correct network.
      2. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode and make sure Airplane mode is turned off.
    3. Renew IP configuration after resume When the issue appears after sleep (pages not loading, looping connect/disconnect):
      1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
      2. Run:
              ipconfig /release
              ipconfig /renew

      3. Test browsing again. This forces Windows to get a fresh IP from the router, which often fixes limited/unstable connectivity after sleep.
    4. Flush DNS cache If name resolution is unstable after sleep:
      1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
      2. Run:
              ipconfig /flushdns

      3. Test the connection again.
    5. Check IP address and DNS when the problem occurs
      1. When the connection is unstable, check that the IP address is not in the 169.254.x.x range. If it is, Windows is failing to get an IP from the router; ensure DHCP is enabled on the router.
      2. Verify a DNS server is listed and can be pinged. If DNS cannot be reached, update router or adapter DNS settings as needed.
    6. Adjust Wi‑Fi power settings (to avoid drop after sleep)
      1. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
      2. Next to the active plan, select Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
      3. Expand Wireless Adapter Settings > Power Saving Mode.
      4. Set it to Maximum Performance for both On battery and Plugged in. This reduces power‑saving actions that can destabilize Wi‑Fi after sleep.
    7. Reinstall or update the wireless adapter driver If the problem started recently or after an update:
      1. In Device Manager, expand Network adapters.
      2. Right‑click the Wi‑Fi adapter and select Uninstall device.
      3. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device and select Uninstall.
      4. Restart the PC; Windows will reinstall the adapter and default driver.
      5. If needed, install the latest Wi‑Fi driver from the PC or adapter manufacturer.
    8. As a last resort, use Network reset If none of the above resolves the instability:
      1. Select Start > Settings > Network & internet.
      2. On Windows 11, select Advanced network settings > Network reset.
      3. Select Reset now and confirm.
      4. After restart, reconnect to Wi‑Fi and test sleep/resume again. Note: Network reset removes and reinstalls all network adapters and resets their settings to defaults; VPN clients and virtual switches may need to be re‑set up.
