An Azure service that provides access to OpenAI’s GPT-3 models with enterprise capabilities.
Hello Steffen Schreiber,
Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A and thank you for posting your questions here.
I understand that your json_schema not supported in gpt-chat-latest-2026-05-05 via Responses API.
Simply because JSON Mode and Structured Outputs are different features. JSON Mode uses: { "type": "json_object" }
while Structured Outputs require: { "type": "json_schema" }
The mismatch is between the requested feature and the supported Azure OpenAI configuration. Structured Outputs require a supported model, a supported API version, and a supported API surface. Microsoft documentation states that API version 2024-08-01-preview is the first Azure OpenAI API version that supports Structured Outputs, and that newer preview APIs and the GA v1 API also support it. - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/foundry/openai/how-to/structured-outputs
To resolve this, use a supported Azure OpenAI model such as gpt-4o version 2024-08-06, gpt-4o-mini version 2024-07-18, or another model currently listed as supporting Structured Outputs, together with a supported API version and Chat Completions or Responses API. - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/foundry/openai/how-to/structured-outputs
If the request is being sent through Azure OpenAI Assistants or Foundry Agents, json_schema should not be used there because Structured Outputs are documented as unsupported for Assistants and Foundry Agents. In that case, use Chat Completions, Responses API where available, or function calling instead. - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/foundry/openai/how-to/structured-outputs
After switching to a supported model/API combination and sending response_format.type = "json_schema" through a supported API surface, the request should succeed and return JSON that conforms to the supplied schema.
