Expedited updates not behaving like emergency deployments

Hello,

We used the expedited quality update feature during a zero-day security event expecting devices to install patches immediately. Instead, many laptops waited several hours and some users were never prompted to reboot. I’m trying to understand what expedited actually changes under the hood in Windows Update for Business. Does it bypass scan schedules entirely, or does it still depend on normal update orchestration timing?

Hi Mia Wilson.

Expedited updates force immediate installation, but restart behavior remains governed by your existing deadline policies rather than the update signal itself. If reboots are being delayed, it is likely due to active hours or grace periods still being in effect. To troubleshoot persistent issues, you can audit the registry at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\Orchestrator\USO_AddIns to identify specific blocks preventing the restart, such as active user sessions or power management restrictions. To ensure immediate reboots during critical security events, configure your Deadline and Grace Period settings to zero to override standard user-interrupt behavior.

Hope this answer brings you some useful information.
