Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Yahoo has disabled basic authentication for IMAP/SMTP and now requires modern authentication (OAuth). Outlook 2013 does not support modern authentication for Outlook.com/Exchange-style accounts and is also affected when providers like Yahoo remove basic auth, so the account can often still send (cached auth) but stops receiving.
Because Outlook 2013 cannot be updated to support modern authentication for these accounts, the reliable options are:
- Continue using the new Outlook (Microsoft 365) for this Yahoo account, where send/receive already works.
- If Yahoo still allows POP3 with an app password for this mailbox, reconfigure the account in Outlook 2013 as POP3 instead of IMAP, using the POP server and ports from Yahoo plus the app password. This mirrors the documented workaround of switching from IMAP to POP when IMAP authentication fails:
- In Control Panel → Mail → Show Profiles → Add, create a new profile.
- Choose Manual setup or additional server types → POP or IMAP.
- Select POP3 as Account Type and enter Yahoo’s POP/SMTP server names, ports, and security settings, plus the app password.
- Test account settings until both tests succeed, then set this new profile as the default.
If Yahoo has fully blocked basic auth for both IMAP and POP on this account, Outlook 2013 will not be able to connect, and the only practical solution is to use a newer Outlook client that supports modern authentication (such as the Outlook included with Microsoft 365 or the free Outlook for Windows) and configure rules there.
