I have Wihdows 11 Home on a Microsoft Surface Go 3, from 2021. I installed Version 25H2 (repair version) update in January. It presented itself again and so I reinstalled it (the repair version). But afterwards, my PC began to uninstall this repair version.
So now, when Windows Update presented version 25H2 (repair version) for a third time, I hesitated. However I followed up an answer given somewhere else on Microsoft: I went to Settings--System--Recovery and clicked the Reinstall Now button under "Fix problems with Windows Updates". Windows Update then presented me with all the available updates, INCLUDING the 25H2 repair version which I had wanted to avoid. It's currently downloading all 4 updates. Is there any way to avoid this vicious circle, as regards the version 25H2 (repair version) Update?

When you select the Reinstall option windows uses what is known as the repair version during that process to reinstall windows. It should only happen once however.
In Update history does it show the Repair version installed/completed successfully in the past?
It wasn't a reinstallation. What I mean is, I never selected a "reinstallstion" button. Also, I'm sure that update history showed a completed installation of this update in its history (I'm on my smartphone at the moment). Now, I've just looked. It says it was successfully installed on 13/10/2025. Update 25H2 itself, that is, not the repair version.
So does Update history show an entry using the Repair version or just that 25H2 has been installed?
According to Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of windows - Microsoft it looks like the repair version is only used after selecting to Reinstall now from the Recovery option.
25H2 itself had been successfully installed. The repair version of 25H2 had also been successfully installed on 29/01/2026. But it presented itself again the other day. I fully downloaded it but it failed to install fully (I had to leave my hotspot, but hoped installation would complete).
I don't know why the Repair version would download without using 'fix problems using windows update'. Perhaps the option to use the latest ISO image from Microsoft might fix any settings that are casuing the problem.
Go to Download Windows 11 - Microsoft and download the ISO iimage (when you have a good internet connection.
Once downloaded open File Explorer and go to the location of the ISO file and Mount it. Select the virtual drive letter that is created and in the right hand pane run setup. This is an In-place upgrade/repair. Follow the onscreen instructions.
Thanks for your response. But I'll think I'll follow the advice of a collegue of yours and try the update again, this time in the library.
While at the library I would download the ISO image. It is around 4.5 to 5 GB in size so a good connection is needed to complete that download.
You will have the option to try the Repair/In-Place upgrade then using that image file.
Yes, I'll try that instead, I think. Because I installed the repair version "successfully" before, as far as I'm concerned. Don't know why it presented itself again.
Neil D, I tried and failed to simply get the update again. During the process, I created 50GB of space on my PC, so I have my doubts as to whether the update failed due to lack of space. It was a library with a good connection, so I've given up now. I've been trying to transfer to my chromebook for a few weeks now, so this failure was the last straw. It's very troublesome, because my printer doesn't work with chromebook. I'll just try to keep using my PC to write letters and print them, until my ink runs out. Nevertheless I thank you for your help, and consider your answers the best ones.
I have to ask. Did you download the ISO image file from Download windows 11 - Microsoft and try that for a repair of windows?

None of these answers are even addressing the correct issue, and I have the same problem. This is an MS Update bug I am sure and it's incredibly annoying as it takes ages for a repair version install, not to mention it resets all full backups in macrium reflect. Other people are also having the same issue.
I just had another one popup and in windows update and there's nothing wrong with my current install. I double checked with scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and both 100%, no issues.
But windows updates every month or so insists on pushing these stupid Windows 11 25H2 (repair version) updates. I've had to do 5 so far and I've had enough with this update stupidity.
How do we break this circle of stupid windows update hell? Please do not respond with the usual blame the user with instructions of no relevance. THIS IS A WINDOWS UPDATE PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS ONE. Stop blaming the users.
Especially stupid is the AI answer saying: "From similar Windows 11 25H2 update issues, the durable way to break this loop is to perform an in-place repair/upgrade of Windows 11 using installation media (ISO) rather than relying only on Windows Update. "
If that's the case then why is Windows Update recommending updates that don't actually work?
Can someone with actual Microsoft authority investigate this issue. It's annoying as hell, has been around for nearly a year. Fix your system please.
@sonicviz I understand your frustration. This is mainly a user forum and if you have evidence of this being widely reported it may be worth using the Feedback Hub in windows for the Microsoft development team.
You can share a link to this forum thread as part of the feedback.
Unless you try the repair/in-place upgrade method using the windows 11 ISO you won't know whether or not it works.
As a regular user of this Q&A forum I have only seen this thread detailing the problem. Not had this error myself and Microsoft state the repair version is used as part of selecting Reinstall under Recovery.

every month on my surface laptop studio windows 11 will download 25h2 Repair version ...
takes a long time to finish up the download as such its so annoying .
have you found the solution for this ??

I've carried out a search on the internet and haven't found anything else to suggest. As you say there are others with the same problem but this was the only thread I had seen here.

Its september 2026 - I started facing the same issue now
WU offered me to install repair version of windows (25H2) - I did install it successfully, yet after installation - the message doesn't go away. It keeps popping up again, this is so frustrating.
