I have removed all of the animations from selected slides but in the slide sorted view there are still animation icons. When I preview the show, animations are still playing .

Based on your description, I assume that you have already opened the Animation Pane (Animations tab) and removed all animations, correct? If you haven’t done that yet, please recheck from that pane to ensure no animation remains.
You may also want to go to View > Slide Master (or press Option + Command + 1) and check whether any animations are applied there. Animations set in the Slide Master will still play even if they are removed from individual slides. If you find any, please remove them from the Slide Master and then recheck your presentation.
Additionally, you can select all objects on the slide (Cmd + A) and carefully check for:
These hidden objects can sometimes still carry animations and cause them to play during the presentation.

They are Slide master animations. I have removed them from the master slides and reset the individual slides but the inherited animations persist. I eventually opened the presentation on a PC and all of the Master slide animations were visible in the Animation pane. Apparently there is no way to view them in Powerpoint for Mac. Microsoft says that this feature is not supported.

Animation effectss on slide/layout masters do appear in the Animation Pane but only when in Slide Master View.

Have you had a chance to try Bob’s suggestion? He is a top contributor and very experienced with Office for Mac, and from my own testing, his point looks accurate.
If you just need to present urgently and don’t mind temporarily ignoring all animations (including the intentional ones on individual slides), there’s also a quick workaround: Go to the Slide Show tab on the ribbon > click Set Up Slide Show > under Show options, check Show without animation > click OK. This does not delete any animations; it simply disables them during playback.
Alternatively, you can consider creating a completely new blank PowerPoint file. From the original file, select the slides you want and press Cmd + C, then switch to the new file, right-click (or Ctrl + click) in the slide thumbnail pane and choose Use Destination Theme. After pasting, check if the slides retain their layout but lose the hidden animations. If fonts or backgrounds change after pasting, you can fix everything in one go by going to View > Slide Master in the new file and adjusting it there, instead of editing each slide individually.

I just wanted to check in and see how things are going on your side. Have you had a chance to review the replies provided, and were any of them helpful?
The issue is a complex one as the template that I use was created on Powerpoint for Windows and I now need to use the same template but I now have a Mac. The animations that play in the show but do not appear in the animation pane are on the slide masters. As Bob pointed out, these do show in the animation pane when in the master view. I have removed them from the master and reset the affected slides but the inherited animations are still present, although not shown in the animation pane.
When I uploaded the presentation onto a PC to present it, the master animations were all present in the animation pane and after copying them to the slide, I was able to remove them from each affected slide.
So the presentation went as expected. Unfortunately I am still in the same position as for any future presentation, I will be in the same boat...

I tested this behavior in my environment but was unable to reproduce the same issue. In my case, the animation disappears from the main task pane, but it still appears in the Slide Master, where I’m able to remove it manually.
Based on your description, I understand that you originally created the slides on a Windows PC, then transferred them to a Mac, and later back to another Windows PC. Could you please clarify how the file was transferred between these devices? For example:
Also, since you mentioned that copying the slide and removing the animation from the copied slide works, have you tried using the Reuse Slides option on Mac to see if it helps in your scenario?
Have you used the Animations Pane available on the Animations tab of the Ribbon? It should list any existing animation effects regardless of whether the animated object is visible.
