A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
The error AADSTS5000225: This tenant has been blocked due to inactivity means the Microsoft Entra ID/Azure tenant is in an inactive, blocked state. Reactivation is only possible within a limited window; after that the tenant is permanently deleted.
Use these steps depending on timing and role:
- Check whether reactivation is still possible
Tenants that are blocked due to inactivity can be reactivated only within 20 days of entering the inactive state. After 20 days, the tenant is deleted and cannot be recovered. - If within 20 days – contact Microsoft to reactivate
As a tenant administrator:- Contact Microsoft using the published global support phone numbers: see the link in the “Tenant inaccessible due to inactivity” article.
- After opening a case, do not submit additional assistance requests for the same issue until a decision is received.
- If more than 20 days have passed
- The tenant is deleted and cannot be reactivated.
- A new tenant and, if needed, a new Azure subscription must be created.
- For subscriptions that were blocked or deleted due to inactivity, see the guidance under “Subscription blocked or automatically deleted.” If the subscription was deleted, it cannot be reactivated and a new subscription is required.
- If sign-in to the portal is failing
While waiting for support or to verify the tenant:- Try signing in directly with the tenant in the URL, for example:
https://portal.azure.com/<TenantId>or
https://portal.azure.com/<yourTenantName>.onmicrosoft.com - If the tenant is already in the permanently deleted state, these URLs will not restore access; they are mainly useful when the tenant is still present but blocked.
- Try signing in directly with the tenant in the URL, for example:
- If the tenant is permanently deleted
- Create a new tenant from the Entra admin center (
https://entra.microsoft.com/→ Entra ID → Overview → Manage tenants → Create). - Then create or associate a new Azure subscription with that tenant as needed.
- Create a new tenant from the Entra admin center (
If the tenant has been blocked for less than 20 days and phone support via the automated system is not helping, insist on reaching a live agent using the global support numbers referenced in the documentation, as only Microsoft support can remove the inactivity block.
