If the printed Windows Server product key is physically damaged and unreadable, the only supported options are:
- If there is valid proof of purchase for that specific license, advise the customer to contact Microsoft Support directly. With proof of purchase, support may be able to replace the product key or offer alternative options.
- If the key cannot be recovered or replaced, the customer will need to obtain a new, valid Windows Server license from an authorized channel.
Product keys are not stored in a simple file on the media or packaging, and if the key was only ever printed on the damaged label and never activated on any device, it cannot be programmatically retrieved. The resolution path is therefore through Microsoft Support and/or purchasing a replacement license.
The customer or reseller should:
- Collect proof of purchase (invoice, order confirmation, etc.).
- Contact Microsoft Support via the official support channel and request assistance with a damaged product key.
If Microsoft Support cannot reissue the key, the only remaining option is to buy a new license.
