Hello,

A customer of our HPE Store, damaged the Microsoft Windows Server License Key printed, during the unpacking process, unfortunately we cannot see the information as this was purchased as a Marketplace model, and it was provided physically to the customer. Is there a way for the customer to get his license key? or how can we help him to get it and the OS to be useful for him?

Thank you!!!

Hi De La Torre, Carlos Alberto

Since the license key was physically provided and got damaged, unfortunately Microsoft doesn’t have a way to regenerate or reissue that same printed key directly. Marketplace purchases are handled through the seller, so the best route is to reach out to the Marketplace vendor you bought it from. They should be able to validate the purchase on their side and provide a replacement key or guidance.

If the customer has already registered the product or linked it to their Microsoft account, sometimes the key info can be retrieved from the account portal. Otherwise, the vendor is really the only channel to get a new usable key. In the meantime, if the OS is installed but not activated, it’ll still run in a limited mode so the system isn’t completely unusable, but activation is needed for full functionality.

So contact the Marketplace seller with proof of purchase, and they’ll help reissue or provide a new key.

If the printed Windows Server product key is physically damaged and unreadable, the only supported options are:

    1. If there is valid proof of purchase for that specific license, advise the customer to contact Microsoft Support directly. With proof of purchase, support may be able to replace the product key or offer alternative options.
    2. If the key cannot be recovered or replaced, the customer will need to obtain a new, valid Windows Server license from an authorized channel.

Product keys are not stored in a simple file on the media or packaging, and if the key was only ever printed on the damaged label and never activated on any device, it cannot be programmatically retrieved. The resolution path is therefore through Microsoft Support and/or purchasing a replacement license.

    The customer or reseller should:

    • Collect proof of purchase (invoice, order confirmation, etc.).
    • Contact Microsoft Support via the official support channel and request assistance with a damaged product key.

If Microsoft Support cannot reissue the key, the only remaining option is to buy a new license.
