The error message indicates that the current combination of chart types in the PowerPoint chart is not allowed. PowerPoint (and the underlying Excel chart engine) only supports certain combinations when creating combo charts; some chart types simply cannot be mixed together. To fix this, change the chart type to a supported single chart type or to a compatible combination.
Use these steps in PowerPoint for Mac:
- Select the problematic chart.
- On the Chart Design tab, select Change Chart Type.
- In the Change Chart Type dialog, choose a single chart type that matches the data (for example, Column, Line, or Box and whisker chart if appropriate) instead of mixing incompatible types.
- Select OK to apply.
If the chart still does not display correctly, remove the chart and insert a new one using a supported chart type:
- Go to Insert > Chart.
- Pick a chart type from the gallery (for example, Column, Line, or Box and Whisker) that suits the data.
- Enter or paste the data into the associated Excel sheet.
If the chart layout or size looks wrong after changing the type, adjust it:
- With the chart selected, go to Chart Design > Change Chart Type again if needed to pick a different type.
- Use Chart Tools > Format > Size to resize the chart.
- Optionally, add or adjust the chart title to clarify the new chart type:
- Select the chart, then select the + button at the top-right of the chart.
- Enable Chart Title, then edit the title text.
These steps ensure that only supported chart type combinations are used, which removes the error.
