Hello Support ,

i have one question , regards of upgrading or converting windows server 2022 evaluation to full Standard edition by dism command , will this delete installed application or files ?

will this same process applies for windows server 2025 ? Please confirm.
Which one should we buy? this is a standalone server where we just need activation:

A. Microsoft Windows Server Standard Edition - license - 16 cores

B. Microsoft Windows Server Standard Edition - license & software assurance - 16 cores

The answer is No. Upgrading or converting Windows Server 2022 Evaluation to Standard using the DISM command won’t wipe out your installed apps or files. What it does is basically flip the license state of the OS, so your workloads, roles, and data stay intact. That said, I always recommend doing a backup before you run the conversion, just in case something unexpected happens in your environment. The DISM process is pretty straightforward: you provide the target edition and product key, and once it completes, you’ll need a reboot. After that, everything should look the same except now you’re on Standard instead of Evaluation.

The documented flow is:

Confirm current edition:
```
   DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition
```
Check which editions you can convert to:
```
   DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions
```

(Optional) Save the license terms:

   DISM /online /Set-Edition:<target edition> /GetEula:C:\license.rtf

Perform the conversion with your product key:

   DISM /online /Set-Edition:<target edition> /ProductKey:<product key> /AcceptEula

However, any operation that changes the OS edition carries some risk (for example, if there is a power loss or existing corruption), so a full system and data backup is strongly recommended before running the DISM Set-Edition command.
