On Xbox consoles, Microsoft accounts can use passwordless sign-in methods (such as Face ID via the Microsoft Authenticator app or other “Other ways to sign in” options). When this is enabled, the console may stop accepting the password directly and instead require an alternate method each time.
To reduce how often this happens:
- At the Xbox sign-in screen, choose Other ways to sign in and use one of the configured methods (Face ID via phone, PIN, security key, or code to email) as suggested in the Error 400 guidance.
- After signing in, check that the account is fully added and set to stay signed in on the console (for example, enabling options like “Remember me” or equivalent where available so the console does not prompt every time).
- If sign-in with password continues to fail or loops, use the account security tools to verify the account is working correctly:
- If the account password or username has stopped working elsewhere, use Recover your account at Recover your account to reset the password and ensure the credentials are valid.
- If Error 400 or similar appears when trying to sign in with a password, follow the steps described for Error 400: use a different sign-in method, update the app (if using a Microsoft app), try another device, or change the network.
If the console still refuses password sign-in but other methods work, continue using the passwordless/alternate sign-in options as recommended and consider going fully passwordless for easier access.
