A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Copilot in Word depends on both a valid Copilot‑eligible subscription and a correctly refreshed license in the Word app. If Copilot disappeared even though the subscription is still active, use these steps on Windows Word:
- Confirm the correct account is signed in
- In Word, check the account shown at the top-right of the window and under File > Account.
- For home use, the signed-in account must have Microsoft 365 Personal or Family (or Copilot Pro) assigned. If another account is primary, switch to the Copilot‑licensed account.
- Make sure Office is up to date
- In any Microsoft 365 app, go to File > Account.
- Use Update Options > Update Now (per Install Office updates) to move to the latest build, as Copilot availability depends on current versions.
- Refresh the Office license
- In Word, go to File > Account.
- Select Update License.
- Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and reopen Word so the license refresh takes effect.
- If using a Mac instead of Windows (for completeness)
- In Word, select Word > About Word > More Info… > Refresh License.
- Close all Office apps and reopen Word.
- Then verify under Word > Preferences > Privacy that:
- Experiences that analyze your content is turned on.
- All connected experiences is turned on.
- If Copilot still does not appear
- For home subscriptions (Personal/Family/Premium), AI features may be restricted by age requirements in some regions. If the signed-in profile does not meet the regional age requirement, Copilot and other AI features can be removed from the apps even when the subscription is active.
- If using a work or school account, an admin may have disabled Copilot or not assigned a Copilot license; in that case, the Microsoft 365 admin must verify that a Copilot‑supporting license is assigned and that Copilot is not blocked by policy.
