Read aloud feature

I can't get Read Aloud to use the natural voices I have installed. I get it to work and it frequently reverts back to the default mechanical voices. Narrator started reading everything in every app, dialogue box, website. I only want for WORD.

Read Aloud in Word can use two different kinds of voices:

    1. Local “mechanical” system voices (e.g., Microsoft David, Zira, Mark)
    2. Online, more natural-sounding cloud voices (via Microsoft’s Speech service)

When Read Aloud suddenly switches back to the mechanical voices or stops using the natural ones, it is usually due to a problem with the current Word/Read Aloud configuration or the online voice service. There is also a separate Windows feature called Narrator that reads everything on screen; this is independent of Word’s Read Aloud and needs to be turned off if it is reading all apps.

    Use these steps:

    1. Turn off Narrator so it stops reading everything
      • Open Windows Settings → Accessibility → Narrator.
      • Turn Narrator Off so it no longer reads other apps, dialog boxes, and websites.
      • This does not affect Word’s Read Aloud; it only stops the global screen reader.
    2. Make sure Read Aloud is being used correctly in Word
      • In Word, use Read Aloud (from the Review tab or the Read Aloud button) rather than Narrator.
      • Read Aloud uses text-to-speech (TTS) from the device or Microsoft’s service and is the correct feature for reading only the document text.
    3. If Read Aloud keeps reverting to mechanical voices
      • This behavior has been reported by other users and can be caused by an issue in the latest version of Word.
      • A commonly reported fix is to reset the Read Aloud configuration in the registry so Word rebuilds it and reconnects to the online voices:
        1. Close Word.
        2. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
        3. Navigate to the key indicated in the recommended answer from the Q&A thread (the key that stores the Read Aloud voice configuration).
        4. Locate the value mentioned there and rename it (for example, add -1 at the end of its name).
        5. Close Registry Editor.
        6. Reopen Word and test Read Aloud again.
      • Renaming that value forces Word to recreate its Read Aloud settings and often restores the natural-sounding internet voices.
    4. If internet voices still do not load
      • The natural voices are provided by Microsoft’s online Speech service. If they are not loading, Word may fall back to local system voices.
      • Ensure the device is online and signed in with a Microsoft 365 account, as Read Aloud relies on connected experiences.
      • If Read Aloud is missing or not behaving correctly, restart Word or sign out and back in to the Microsoft 365 account, as suggested in the Read Aloud troubleshooting guidance.
    5. If the problem persists
      • Because this issue has been linked to specific Word builds, and some users report it resolving only after fixes from Microsoft, consider submitting feedback from within Word (File → Feedback) so the issue is visible to the product team.

These steps separate Narrator (system-wide screen reader) from Word’s Read Aloud and reset Read Aloud’s configuration so it can use the natural online voices again.
