Copilot says it cannot complete a powerpoint presentation

Copilot in PowerPoint relies on an active connection to Microsoft 365 services and can only work within supported limits and file types. When it appears to be “stuck” waiting to complete a task for a long time, the following checks and workarounds are available based on documented behavior:

1. Confirm the file and environment are supported

• Copilot in PowerPoint only works with PowerPoint files (.ppt, .pptx) and requires an internet connection.
• If the Copilot button is grayed out or inactive, verify that the Microsoft 365 app version, license, network, and privacy settings meet the documented Microsoft 365 Copilot requirements.
• If the file is extremely large or complex, be aware Copilot can summarize or work with presentations up to approximately 40,000 words; beyond that, behavior may be unreliable.

2. Try a simpler, scoped prompt Instead of asking Copilot to complete the entire presentation in one step, break the work into smaller actions that match supported scenarios:

• Ask Copilot to “Summarize this presentation” to generate a bulleted summary of key points.
• Ask Copilot to “Show key slides” so it focuses only on identifying important slides.
• Ask Copilot to “Show action items” to extract tasks from the content. If these smaller actions succeed, then gradually refine or extend the presentation rather than asking for a large, multi-step transformation in one prompt.

3. Use the in-app Copilot entry points Ensure Copilot is being invoked from within PowerPoint rather than from outside the app:

• Open the presentation in PowerPoint.
• Select the Copilot button on the ribbon to open the Copilot pane.
• Enter a focused prompt such as “Summarize this presentation” or “Create a short presentation about [topic]”. If using a keyboard or screen reader, open the Copilot menu from the slide, choose an option like “Add a slide”, “Add a topic”, or “Summarize this presentation”, then complete the prompt and press Enter so Copilot can generate the response.

4. Regenerate or restart the session If Copilot has been “waiting” for an extended period:

• Close the Copilot pane, save and close the presentation, then reopen PowerPoint and the file and try the prompt again.
• If the issue persists only with one file, try copying the content into a new presentation and then use Copilot on the new file.

5. Alternative approach: generate from an existing file If the research is in a Word or other document, an alternative is to let Copilot create a new presentation from that file instead of transforming an existing deck:

• In PowerPoint, create a new presentation (or open one to reuse its theme).
• Select Home > Copilot.
• Choose “Create a presentation from [File]”, select the research document, and send.
• Let Copilot draft the slides, then edit or ask Copilot to add more slides or adjust content.

If none of these supported flows work and Copilot repeatedly fails to complete tasks across different files, the next step is to investigate environment issues (app version, connectivity, or profile) or contact support, as this behavior is not expected in normal operation.
