Powerpoint "Design Suggestions" never works!

Design Suggestions (formerly Designer) in PowerPoint is sensitive to several conditions, which is why it can feel inconsistent. When it pops up uninvited or fails to show ideas, it is usually because of how the slide is set up or how the feature is configured.

To make it behave more predictably, check these areas:

1. Confirm eligibility and feature status

• Design Suggestions are only available to Microsoft 365 subscribers on the desktop. One subscription that does not include it is Office 365 Germany.
• On PowerPoint for the web, Design Suggestions are available to everyone.
• An administrator can turn the feature off for an organization. If the button is missing entirely in a Microsoft 365 subscription, IT needs to re‑enable it.
• If PowerPoint was upgraded from a non‑subscription Office to Microsoft 365, uninstall and reinstall Office so subscriber features (including Designer) are fully enabled.
• If the Design Suggestions button is missing right after installation, restarting PowerPoint can make it appear.

2. Turn on connected experiences Designer/Design Suggestions needs cloud services:

• Go to File > Account.
• Under Account Privacy, select Manage Settings.
• Under optional connected experiences, ensure Turn on optional connected experiences is checked.

3. Ensure a supported theme and internet connection

• The feature requires an active internet connection; if offline, no suggestions will appear.
• Use a theme that comes with PowerPoint, not a custom or third‑party theme. Custom themes can prevent suggestions from appearing.

4. Fix slides where suggestions never appear Designer will simply stay silent if the slide content does not meet its rules:

For picture‑based slides:

• Use the Title or Title + Content slide layout (from Home > Layout).
• Do not add extra shapes or drawn text boxes on the same slide as the photo(s).
• Use at most four images per slide (.jpg, .png, .gif, .bmp), each larger than 200 × 200 pixels.

For process or text‑heavy slides:

• Use the Title + Content layout.
• Avoid additional photos, shapes, or extra objects on the same slide as the process text.

For any slide:

• Designer does not generate ideas when there are manually drawn shapes or text boxes on the slide. Text should be in placeholders from the layout, not in free‑floating text boxes.
• If multiple people are editing the same slide at the same time (co‑authoring), Designer will not offer suggestions on that slide. Once only one person is editing and performs an action (like inserting a photo), suggestions resume.

5. When it appears “too often” If Design Suggestions opens when it is not wanted:

• Go to File > Options > General.
• Clear Automatically show me design ideas. This stops automatic pop‑ups; suggestions can still be requested manually from the ribbon when needed.

6. When it still feels inconsistent Even with everything configured correctly, Designer only shows ideas when it can generate high‑quality layouts for the current content. If it cannot, it shows nothing rather than low‑quality options. This is by design and can make it feel temperamental, especially on complex or heavily customized slides.

In practice, the most reliable way to use it is:

1. Start from a built‑in theme.
2. Use standard layouts (Title / Title + Content).
3. Keep slides simple (placeholders instead of custom shapes/text boxes).
4. Trigger suggestions manually from the Design/Designer or Home/Design Suggestions button when needed.
