Windows 11 issues such as long update times, freezes, and performance problems can often be reduced by tuning the system and keeping it updated.
For a device that frequently freezes or feels slow, the following actions are recommended:
- Keep Windows updated
- Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates and restart when prompted. Updates often contain reliability and performance fixes.
- Optimize performance settings
- Open Start, type Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, and open it.
- On the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust for best performance to reduce visual effects that consume resources.
- Use a high-performance power plan
- Select Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Under Related settings, select Additional power settings.
- In Power Options, select Show additional plans (if available), then choose High performance.
- Note: This increases power consumption and heat, especially on laptops.
- Check for heavy apps and background processes
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, close apps using high CPU, memory, or disk that are not needed.
- Review the Startup apps section and disable apps that do not need to start with Windows.
- Optimize drives
- Select Start, type Defragment and Optimize Drives, and open it.
- Select the system drive and choose Optimize.
- Reduce interruptions and restart regularly
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Notifications & actions and turn off notifications for apps that are not needed.
- Close unused apps and browser tabs, and restart the PC periodically (Start > Power > Restart) to clear temporary issues.
If the device is older or has limited hardware resources, these optimizations may only help to a point. In such cases, upgrading hardware or moving to a newer device may be necessary for consistent performance.
