Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
To access a personal Outlook.com/Hotmail/Live/MSN mailbox again after moving to a business account, the only supported path is to recover and sign in to the original personal Microsoft account that owns that email address.
Use these steps:
- Recover the personal Microsoft account
- If the issue is that the old personal account password is no longer accepted or the sign-in fails, follow the official account recovery flow described in the Microsoft account guidance:
- If the password was forgotten, use the steps under Reset your password.
- If the password “stopped working,” use the Sign-in Helper tool.
- If the email/username is not recognized, follow My username has stopped working and, if needed, the Sign-in Helper tool again.
- If there are verification-code issues (for example, codes not arriving), follow the troubleshooting steps for verification codes.
- Start from the article I can't sign in to my Microsoft account, then choose the path that matches the problem (forgotten password, username not recognized, verification code issues, etc.).
- If the issue is that the old personal account password is no longer accepted or the sign-in fails, follow the official account recovery flow described in the Microsoft account guidance:
- Complete the account recovery form if normal sign-in fails
- If normal reset flows do not work, use the Microsoft account recovery form referenced in the same article.
- Provide as much accurate information as possible (old passwords, approximate creation date, contacts, recent subject lines) so the system can verify ownership.
- Check if the account was deleted due to inactivity
- If the personal account has not been signed into for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened. In that case, the associated Outlook.com mailbox and its email content are no longer recoverable.
- Once the personal account is recovered
- Sign in directly to Outlook.com with that personal account (for example, the @outlook.com / @hotmail.com address) via a browser.
- This gives access to the personal mailbox only; it is separate from the business (work/school) account.
If recovery fails or there are errors with codes or sign-in, use the support options linked from the same account article to get additional help with Microsoft account recovery.
