Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
The error details (esrc: StartupData with HTTP 401) match cases where the mailbox object in Exchange Online is disabled even though sign-in to the Microsoft account still works. In this state, Outlook on the web and Outlook apps cannot open the mailbox and fail during startup.
Resolution requires action by the tenant administrator:
- Tenant admin must check whether the mailbox is disabled in Exchange Online.
- If the mailbox shows as disabled (AccountDisabled: True), the admin must re-enable the mailbox.
- After re-enabling, sign in again to Outlook on the web and the Outlook app and test access to the inbox.
While waiting for the admin to fix the mailbox state, try these client-side steps (they will not fix a disabled mailbox but can rule out browser issues):
- Sign out of all Microsoft sessions in the browser.
- Clear browser cache (for example, Ctrl+Shift+Delete → clear cached data).
- Open a new InPrivate/Incognito window (for example, Ctrl+Shift+N) and try Outlook on the web again.
- If it works only in InPrivate, disable browser extensions such as ad blockers or VPNs and test again.
If the mailbox remains disabled, only the tenant admin can correct it in Exchange Online; end users cannot fix this themselves.
