Editing Junk Email Blocked Senders and Domains in New Outlook and outlook.office.com fails with "Couldn't save changes"

I get this error in MS Edge, (New) Outlook for Windows, and Chrome for Windows.

Editing any blocked sender - often removing the name (user@) to block a whole domain - fails with this error:

Couldn't save changes
Something went wrong. Please try again later.

I've tried clearing cookies and cache on the browsers, but the message always appears. Workarounds like deleting an entry and adding a new one also fail. Even deleting a single blocked sender from the list fails with this error.

The only way I can add blocked senders is from individual emails. That's a start, but editing the list used to be possible.

What am I missing? Is this working for other folks?

    @Kai-L

@David-9975 is not alone concerning junk email not allowing changes to be saved, similar issue here. Problem exist across multiple devices, browsers, even in private window. Problem exists even if cache is cleared. If I try to remove an entry from my safe sender list, the entry i'm trying to delete disappears, then when I click save I get an error message (Couldn't save changes Something went wrong. Please try again later.), the same thing also, if I try to add an entry, or directly from my junk mail folder, if I click on "Not Junk" for an email, and click Okay on the pop-up that asks if I want to add this to the safe senders list, I also get this message (Couldn't save changes Something went wrong. Please try again later.). This has been an ongoing issue. I've circled back to re-trying changes at different times, with same results. Tried the recommendations above, however still getting the same error.

    Dear @David-9975,

Good day, and I appreciate the clear explanation of your concern. As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or delve into the backend systems to diagnose and fix this for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users.

I attempted to reproduce the issue in my test environment but in my case, I was able to edit the blocked senders list and block an entire domain without encountering any errors. I also did not find any recent reports of a similar issue, which suggests this may be a temporary or environment-specific behavior.

In the meantime, you may try the following steps to see if they help:

    • Open Outlook on the web in Incognito/Private browsing mode.
    • Clear the browser cache specifically for outlook.office.com and office.com, then try again.
    • Wait around 10–15 minutes and retry, as this could be a temporary backend issue.

If the issue persists, you can try switching back to Classic Outlook and performing the change there:

    1. In the New Outlook desktop app, toggle off “New Outlook” in the top-right corner to switch to Classic Outlook.
    2. In Classic Outlook, locate the Quick Access Toolbar at the top left, then select Junk > Junk Email Options.
    3. If the Junk option is not visible:
      • Go to File > Options > Quick Access Toolbar.
      • Change the dropdown to All Commands.
      • Locate Junk, click Add >>, and ensure that Show Quick Access Toolbar is checked, then select OK.
    4. Open the Blocked Senders tab and edit or remove the entries as needed, this usually works without the error.

I hope this information helps clarify the situation and provides you with workable solutions. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always happy to help. Have a wonderful day!
