A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
How to regain access to my tenant in Azure.
Hi everyone,
I ran into a self-inflicted issue while experimenting with Azure and I’m hoping someone can guide me toward the correct recovery procedure.
What I did:
- I created a free Azure subscription using my personal Outlook email (the subscription and tenant are both new, empty, and for testing only).
The tenant was successfully set up with my Outlook account as the only Global Administrator, but it was listed as an “External” user (Guest).
While exploring Microsoft Entra ID, I tried to convert my account from External to Internal. In the conversion dialog, I also checked the option “Change email” and typed a brand-new address on the tenant’s default domain (something like ******@mydomain.onmicrosoft.com) and set a new password, thinking the mailbox would be created automatically.
What’s broken now:
The original Outlook account (******@outlook.it) no longer belongs to the tenant – it’s just a personal Microsoft account that sees no directory at all.
The newly created identity (******@mydomain.onmicrosoft.com) is now the only Global Admin, but that email address doesn’t have a mailbox (Exchange Online isn’t enabled), so I can’t receive the verification code or password reset emails.
When I try to sign in to the Azure portal with my Outlook account, I get an error: “Selected user account does not exist in tenant ‘Microsoft Services’…” – meaning the account is completely detached from the tenant.
I can’t open a support ticket as a Global Admin because I can’t access the tenant at all.
What I’ve tried so far:
Clearing cache/cookies, incognito mode, different browsers – no change.
Using Graph Explorer signed in with my Outlook account – it does not let me see the tenant anymore.
Attempting password reset on the new internal address – fails because no mailbox exists.
What I need help with: Since the tenant is completely empty and used only for learning, I’m ready to provide any proof of ownership (credit card digits, phone number, subscription ID, etc.). Is there an official process for Microsoft support to reset the admin account on a tenant when the only Global Admin is unreachable? Or can the subscription be unlinked so I can start fresh with the same email?
Thank you in advance for any advice or known recovery paths.Hi everyone,
