How to Stop SharePoint from Changing URLs and Breaking Hyperlinks? Update 2026

We've been using the workaround from the link below to open PDFs in a more user-friendly way. As the Adobe integration gives users the possibility to land in our document library (which we don't want).

Until recently this worked without a problem. Now SharePoint changes links again it adds the query param ?web=1 which unfortunately leads to pdfs being opened by the Adobe integration tool. Is there a way, or query param / other alternative, to keep things as they were?

The only way I found was to hinder SharePoint of recognizing certain link patterns (%20 with " ")

    Recently I faced this exact same issue and confirmed that the behavior of SharePoint Online has changed. SharePoint now automatically modifies file links by adding the parameter ?web=1, which forces the document to open in the browser (Office Online) and prevents the previous behavior of direct download or URL-based control.
