Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
Since the private email used as security info is no longer accessible, the only supported way to prove ownership and update the security info is through Microsoft’s self-service flows. Directly sending “approval information” to support is not available for personal Outlook.com/Microsoft accounts.
Use the path that matches the situation:
- Password still known, but some security info lost
- Sign in to the Advanced security options page of the Microsoft account: Sign in.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify and choose a new email or phone that is currently accessible.
- A code is sent to that new email/phone; enter the code and select Next.
- Expand the old security info entry (the lost private email) and select Remove, then confirm.
- Do not change all security info at once; otherwise the account may be restricted for 30 days.
- Password known, but all security info lost
- Start signing in to the Microsoft account: Sign in.
- At the Verify your identity step, select I don't have any of these.
- Follow the instructions to replace security info.
- After replacement, sign-in is blocked for 30 days while the new security info is pending. If the old security info becomes available again during this period, it can still be used, but doing so cancels the update.
- Password forgotten and no security info
- Read the guidance in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form.
- Submit the account recovery form here: Recover account.
- Provide as much accurate information as possible (old passwords, contacts, subject lines, etc.). This form is the only way to prove ownership when normal verification is not possible.
Support agents cannot manually send verification codes or override these automated checks for security reasons. All ownership proof must go through the Advanced security options flow or the account recovery form.
