Several common issues can prevent creation of a Microsoft Learn account, all related to the underlying Microsoft account (MSA) that Learn requires.
- No Microsoft account yet
- A Microsoft Learn profile requires a Microsoft account (personal MSA or work/school login).
- If there is no Microsoft account, one must be created first. If creation fails, see the points below.
- Email address already used or closed
- Addresses used for Microsoft accounts cannot be reused.
- Even if an old Microsoft account was closed a long time ago, a new account cannot be created with that same email address.
- In this case, use a different email address or a different sign‑up method (for example, phone vs email) to create a new Microsoft account.
- Technical issues while creating the Microsoft account
- If the Microsoft account sign‑up itself fails, try:
- Using an alternative sign‑up method (email instead of phone, or vice versa).
- Using a different device or browser.
- After successfully creating the Microsoft account, return to Microsoft Learn and sign in; the site will prompt to create a Learn profile if one does not exist.
- If the Microsoft account sign‑up itself fails, try:
- Using work or school accounts
- A Microsoft Learn profile can be created with a personal Microsoft login account (recommended) or a work/school login account.
- If using a work/school account, ensure it is a valid Microsoft login (for example, associated with Microsoft 365 or Azure AD). If not, first create or link a Microsoft account as required by the program or portal being used.
If the problem is specifically that the Microsoft account sign‑in or password is not working (rather than profile creation itself), use the Microsoft account self‑service help to recover username or reset password, then sign in again and complete the Learn profile setup.
