Microsoft project management software used to plan, manage, and communicate a project schedule and other information among workgroup members, project managers, and other stakeholders.
The repeated “safe mode / repair” prompts usually indicate either a damaged Office/Project installation or a problematic add‑in.
Try these steps in order:
- Start Project in Safe Mode
- Select the Search icon in Windows and open the Run app.
- Type
winproj /safe(same pattern asexcel /safeorwinword /safe) and press Enter. - Confirm that the Project title bar shows “(Safe Mode)”.
- If Project does not start in Safe Mode, skip to step 3 (repair Office/Project).
- If Project starts in Safe Mode, continue with step 2.
- Disable add-ins
- With Project still in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add‑Ins.
- In the Manage list at the bottom, choose an add‑ins type (for example COM Add‑ins) and select Go.
- Clear the check box for one add‑in and select OK.
- Close Project, then start it normally (not in Safe Mode).
- If Project opens normally, the last add‑in cleared is causing the problem. Leave it disabled or remove it, or check the vendor’s site for an updated version.
- If Project still fails, repeat the process and disable the next add‑in, testing each time.
- If all add‑ins are disabled and Project still fails, the issue is not add‑ins; proceed to step 3.
- Run an Online Repair of Office/Project
A full Online Repair is more thorough than the quick “Repair now” dialog and is recommended when apps keep asking to repair.
- Close all Office apps, including Project.
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features (or Programs and Features in Control Panel, depending on Windows version).
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office/Project in the list and choose Modify.
- Choose Online Repair (not just Quick Repair) and follow the prompts.
- When the repair completes, restart Windows and try opening Project again.
If the problem persists even after Online Repair and add‑ins are disabled, a full uninstall of Office/Project followed by reinstall is typically the next step, ensuring the license is correctly attached to the Microsoft account before reinstalling.
