Unable to verify a custom domain
I am trying to add my own domain in Entra ID, but the verification fails and only shows a generic message without any useful information to help resolve the issue. I tried registering with both TXT and MX records. I have already checked propagation using nslookup and verification sites.

2026-05-07T12:50:00.8033333+00:00 Hello Whoks , Based on your description, it seems that you are unable to verify your custom domain in your Entra ID tenant, even after correctly adding the TXT records in your domain provider side.
This issue often occurs when the domain has already been verified in another Entra directory, as explained in the following document: Common verification issues
To resolve this, the recommended approach is to contact the Microsoft Data Protection team. You can reach them by calling Microsoft Customer Service using the phone numbers listed here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.
If it doesn't work for you, please don’t worry—let us know, we are happy to assist you further!

2026-05-08T09:29:21.9066667+00:00 The link leads to a "Page Not Found (404)" page.
Also, I tried to follow the steps from the video on this page, but it is impossible to log into my account.
According to the video, it is possible that someone—or even myself—may have created an "unmanaged account" simply by logging into some random Microsoft service with an email from my domain (viral tenant). If it is so simple to create this viral tenant, why isn’t there an equally simple way for me to prove that I own my domain and remove or override all these viral tenants?

2026-05-15T20:16:48.6766667+00:00 I opened a ticket (Support request ID 2605120040002596) in the 'Help + Support' section of the Azure portal on May 12, but I also haven’t received any response. Is Microsoft support always this slow?

2026-05-18T15:21:54.44+00:00 Hello Whoks,
Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A and thank you for posting your questions here.
I understand that you are unable to verify your custom domain in Microsoft Entra ID despite correctly configuring DNS records.
The failure occurs because the domain is already associated with another Microsoft Entra tenant (managed or unmanaged), which prevents verification in your current tenant. Microsoft allows a domain to be verified in only one tenant at a time, regardless of correct TXT/MX records. - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/fundamentals/add-custom-domain
The most reliable method is to:
- Confirm DNS TXT record is correct and publicly resolvable (e.g.,
nslookup -q=TXT yourdomain.com) - Identify if the domain exists in another tenant (common root cause)
- If accessible, remove the domain from the previous tenant
- If it is an unmanaged (“viral”) tenant, perform admin takeover
- If the tenant is inaccessible, escalate to Microsoft Support/Data Protection for domain release
- Retry verification after domain is released or removed
Once the domain is released from the previous tenant or successfully taken over, the verification in your target Entra tenant will complete successfully with no further DNS changes required. Use the below links for more reading and steps:
- Add and verify custom domain – Microsoft Entra
- Admin takeover of unmanaged directory
- Internal admin takeover guide
- Remove a domain from Microsoft 365
- Get support for Microsoft 365
I hope this is helpful! Do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions, steps or clarifications.
